I have some, but I would suggest that you get with a gunsmith.

Is the hammer pulled back? Won't come out till it is.

Did you buy it new? Is it under warranty?

I've never owned a Springer 1911 but I've let the hammers down, with the slide off while cleaning both my Kimber and Colt hundreds of times with no issues.

A hammer that won't cock, flopping back and forth, would qualify as "gun smith scary" to me...

I'd call Springfield Armory and see what they have to say.

Tack

If you were in my immediate area, I would offer to check it out.
Springfield may fix it under warranty. Call them.

Couple of questions:
When you say "safety" are you saying the thumb safety or the grip safety?
Did you have the mainspring housing removed from the frame at the time?

It sounds to me (since you are saying that the hammer flops back and forth and will not cock) that the grip safety somehow came loose (while the main spring housing was off/removed) and the hammer strut is no longer engaging the mainspring.
Just guessing though.

Is the mainspring installed correctly?
