My $.02? Buy another modern 1911 and let your century old model enjoy it's retirement. Metallurgy has come a long way. That old spot hardened frame won't take the beating like one made using modern processes.

Now, should you choose to ignore the previous opinion, seek out a gunsmith who knows their way around a 1911. 1911 barrels are NOT a drop-in piece. There are different sized barrel links and there may be other issues with fitting it to the slide & frame.
Actually buying one shouldn't be a problem. There is no shortage of 1911 barrel manufacturers & vendors. The hardest part will be choosing one from the enormous selection.

i agree with Overkill. buy another one and shoot the snot out of it and retire the older one to limited shooting sessions if you are going to shoot it.

but as Overkill stated, most 1911 barrels are not just a drop-in replacement. most need to be fitted to lock up properly and to have any measure of accuracy. this might mean even having to modify the original parts to make the barrel fit properly. IMO, not a good idea. a gun is only original once and if you modify it in any way, such as to fit another barrel or any other part, you would probably decrease it's value.

I can simplify this thread. The gun is 100 years old. It is a working piece of history. What the hell are you thinking?

If you only want a shooter, why not sell the one you have for

it's original value, then you will have enough to buy 3 or 4

good newer 1911s for range purposes.

Check that pistol's value. The last thing you want to do is

change it.

If you haven't already gotten a PM to offer to buy it, you probably will. I wish I had the money myself.

P.S. --pictures--

Brand? Nearly any brand will work. Though my choice would be a Colt GI. IMHO, they are the most likely to go in with the least trouble. However that's pretty much just supposition on my part. Again, talk to an experienced 1911 gunsmith. Since it will need additional parts...Barrel Link, Link pin and probably a new bushing, talk to the guy who will be doing the job. It's quite likely he would have some good recommendations as to the best way forward.

You might find this interesting: http://coolgunsite.com/pistols/barrels.htm

Oh and about your grips, maybe these folks can help: http://www.cylinder-slide.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=catshow&ref=reprgps
They make a bunch of reproduction stuff for the early models. I think you will enjoy poking around their site.
