For what it's worth (probably not much), I adjust my SD sights at 25 yards, but that's just to have a standard. Most SD shootings are at anywhere from contact distance to 5 yards, so the sights can be set pretty well anywhere and it won't matter.
My silhouette guns are zeroed at 250 meters, because that's where I make my feeble, frustrating attempts to shoot them.

Well I don't shoot competition and I don't take combat courses....I shoot because I like to shoot so having said that, I usually site my gun in around 15-20 yards...my reasoning is because these are the most common yardages I shoot from, these are close enough for me to get reasonable groups from a supported firing position, and lastly I shoot slightly farther than I would typically need in a self defense situation in the house so I have more confidence should the need arise. The reality is that I practice from 7-25 yards because that is what I like to do!

I would like to offer my solution for sighting in a 45acp. I zero for 50 yds-------because this amounts to about 2" high at 25 yards and about Zero at 7 yds and about 4 inchs low at 75yds.
The above is from memory but taken from the sierria ballistics table. my advice is to take your load and sight high above bore hight to the table. and see how high and low the bullet path is at various ranges based on the zero range and chose what you want.

to sight in with a 50yd zero I do not actually sight in at 50 yds, I sight in at either 2 inches high at 25 yds or right on at 7 yds. thus giving me a 50 yd zero

I live in a state that has a lot of places to shoot other than a range. When plinking I hold at the base of a tin can and this is good from 7 yds to 50.

with this zero if my 1911 shoots a perfect group and I make a perfect shot (good luck) it will hit with in 2" of where it is pointed from 0 out to about 65 yds'

why sight in at 7, 20 or 25 yds inless shooting bullseye compition?

Be advised the above is from memory, consult a ballistic table for exact information.

Good post, Sarge
