I am pretty new to guns in general and bought a couple 9mm recently as my first handguns. After reading all the stuff on the forums around the net I have become interested in the 1911s like everyone else. I don't want to spend much money on a really expensive one, because I probably won't shoot it a ton due to the cost of .45 ACP ammo. But I would like to purchase a 1911. Was looking at the taurus ones between $5-600, but then came across the Rock Island brand.

Should I be looking at this brand at all or should I look to another?

How does rock Island compare to Taurus 1911s? The taurus PT 1911 stainless looks pretty nice to me for $608 shipped.

How do they compare to other inexpensive 1911s like this one?

I have seen some pictures of nice looking all black Rock Island 1911s. Where can I find one?

Whats the difference between duracoat Rock Island 1911s and parkerized? Which one looks better and holds up better? I have seen parkerized Rock Island 1911s for $445 shipped and duracoated ones for $395 shipped? I have also seen the nickel for $485 shipped.


I have also read one post that was pretty scarey that said some of the newer RI 1911s have had a defect where inserting the magazine can cause the hammer to drop?

I'm no fan of Taurus but what your are looking at, I'd go with the Taurus.

I would NEVER let the cost of ammo dictate my purchase of the gun I want!

I just receently bought a RIA 1911 and it is a very nice weapon. Shoots well. I had heard good things about it and am very happy with it. Go to the range and see if you can rent one a give it a go.

I've owned multiple Rock Island & Taurii 1911s. I'd prefer a Rock Island Tactical to the Taurus every time. Rock Island has great customer service should you need it and Taurus does not (from personal experience).

I give the same advice to everyone: do not buy the base GI model unless you KNOW you can live with the tiny sights. To upgrade the sights on a GI will cost you more than the difference in price between the models.

In this same price range (if you look around) is a Springer Mil-Spec...

Just so happens I talked to a fellow with a Rock Island this afternoon at the range and he had nothing but praise for this firearm. He even said that it shoots hollow points without a hitch. Sounds like a pretty nice firearm to me.
