Cane, If you were pinching your pennies saving up to buy your ultimate 1911, what would it be? Would it be the T3? Thanks, Ed

Im not cane but my choice for the best current production 1911s are the ones from colt.

I don't think there's a pat answer here.
Not what to do, but what I do...
Avoid Citadel, apparently brittle steel, and so-so CS, to be kind.
American Classic is making some decent 1911s from the Phillipines,
and I have a Brazilian Springfield 1911-A1 which functions
flawlessly, now that it's had it's break-in.

I agree with Jon, I'd go Colt or SA, cause when crap hits the fan I don't an over priced or over rated pistol to hit the fan too. But that's my opinion. Colt and SA have a reputation for producing good quality guns, and I buy mine for range use and most important to keep me and family alive. I'm not putting down Ed brown or Wilsons, but I believe that the person makes the gun a good shooter not the gun making a person a good shooter.
My dad told me when he used to shoot pistol competition in the army, that he took his service pistol and split a playing card standing sideways in half at 50 feet from a standing position. That was the same pistol that went Korea, Vietnam, and Germany on his hip in combat. That same pistol has saved his and other soldiers lives, so in my book Colt is the king of 1911s.

Colt or Springfield Armory.
If you are scraping together money for a firearm, will you have enough dinero for ammo to keep that thing fed?
Just like cars. I could enjoy a Rolls Royce, but I still need gas to keep it running. If I bought a Chevy, then .....
As I get older and resources get more available, then I will get the finer things.

I concur. But I do believe that it does take a little bit of both to really accomplish that goal.

Trying to trick me eh? 
The T3 is a terrific gun but a little dated by now.
A Nighthawk is on my bucket list and I will own one someday! The decision made by Phillips, Cholson and Stone to leave Wilson Combat and concentrate on high-end 1911's is the best thing to happen to the 1911 pattern pistol, other than that inventing thingie John Browning did around the turn of the 20th century.
But if I were to save up (~$6,500 needed) and buy my ultimate 1911 it would be a Colt 70 series, all steel Combat Commander. I'd pack that Colt up and send it to Ted Yost in Tempe.
I would have Heirloom Precision do a Signature Grade Conversion on the Commander and have a finished gun similar to this:
