I just picked up a red dot sight for my 1911 and it requires a Weaver style base. Brownell's has a grip mount base and also a Clark model that mounts on the slide. I've also seen some that mount on the frame and straddle the slide. The gun will be used for general paper punching at the range.

unless your 1911 has a rail im not sure there is much you can do. there are some strange rigs that speed shooting people use but im not conversant with them.
