Oven Baked 1911
while surfing randomly on google looking up 1911 trivia i found this gem listed in the search results. it fully falls in the WTF?!??!?!?!! category. it is a forum posting:

Ok, so I've read several different posts about the method of detail stripping your 1911 (parkerized), coating it with vaseline, and then slowly "cooking" in in the oven. Well, I tried it today, and it smelled very bad. It came out with an orangish film on top of the parkerizing. I did it for 4 hours at 350F. I am now trying to scrape the film off with my fingernails...Perhaps the Vaseline had some sort of additive that burnt?

Funny- I do not recall coating your 1911A1 with Vaseline and then baking it for 4 hrs as being in the -10 manual. Must have missed that. 
Someone should tell him the only way to get the orangey stuff off is to put the pistol in a concrete mixer with a 5 gallon bucket of gravel, and tumble for 4 hours.

I always cook my Vaseline 1911's at 300 and then sprinkle with a little cyan pepper kick it up a notch..Say it Emril....BAM!
Man I never heard of baking any petrol stuff on any machine with moving parts. What's it supposed to do?
