Opinion on Rock Island Armory

So I have been looking at getting my first 1911 and RIA looks like a good place to get a 1911. What are you guys opinion on their 1911's? I know they are made in the Philippines and super cheap but I can't justify paying a grand or more on a Kimber for my first 1911. I would like solid opinions, like people who owned one, shot one, or knows somebody who does.

I would take a RIA 1911 over a Kimber any day! If you do a search there has been a number of threads on these 1911s. They are great guns at an even better price.

You won't be disappointed.

though i have not owned one, i have handled them and for the price they are a very good value. they get excellent reviews from those who do own and shoot them. most of any negative comments have been about very minor issues that were easy to rectify, the biggest being the cheap mags supplied with them. the fit and finish are not Colt quality by any means, but the fit and finish are quite good. machining is done very well and they fit together quite well because of the top quality machining. of a lesser expensive 1911 to purchase, they would be one of my top picks. i have plans on buying one in 38 Super shortly and can say i will buy it without hesitation.

There are a number of threads asking about RIA in this section. One is even directly below this thread. Plenty of reading material on this subject.

Do you like a super tuned VW or a Ferrai? The RIA's are great for the price and good guns for a 1st timer in the 1911 platform. They allow you to see whether or not you like 1911's and if you don't there won't be much of an investment. CS is excellent and they offer lots of choices (officers, full size, railed, etc..) You won't go wrong buying one and trying one out. Just remember 1911's can be addicting. Just realize that I'm not calling Kimbers, Ferraris as I wouldn't own a Kimber.

LK and I agree on Kimber ownership.

They are good guns that just happen to be WAY overpriced for a 1911 with a one year warranty!

Look at a Colt in the same venue. You will be much more happy.

Just the facts, not fan-boy bravado.

My brother sold his Kimber and bought a RIA. He really likes it and says he can shoot it better than his old Kimber. I shot his RIA yesterday and I agree it is very accurate.

My uncle has a kimber pro-carry 2 and it is a FINE weapon, but he also owns a RIA compact and almost never uses the kimber now. They both work just as well as each other.

Btw,
What do you guys think of the double stack mag 1911 by RIA? 17 rounds of 9mm or 16 rounds of 45 i believe..
