Open Carry Holster for a Commander-size 1911

Hey guys, so I'm looking for an open carry holster for my commander sized 1911 - I planned to get a CCW but not for some time. In the meantime, I would like to have a way to have my firearm on my person when going to the firing range and various other places. I'm well aware of the implications of open carrying in public and would take serious consideration about my surroundings, approach, and attitude before doing so.

All that said, what would be a recommended holster? I'm figuring there isn't a great concealed holster option that would double as an open carry - so I'd like to know the best kind of on the hip open carry holster you all have experience with. I'd prefer to avoid the hard plastics as I don't want them wearing the finish, but otherwise have at it.

Oops, realized I should mention - my normal attire usually doesn't have a belt on, but I realize now that might not offer many good options to actually have the holster stay on my person when drawing from the holster. Are there any options, or do I basically have to wear some form of pants that allow a belt to be worn? Also I will carry on my right side, and I am right handed (I believe strong side carry? Sorry, don't know the terminology).

For me, I like Andrews Leathers.

My Monarch can be taken off the shoulder assembly and put on the belt.

If you are going to open carry please give some serious thought to weapon retention when you buy a holster.

Don't open carry without retention. Period. Think your superman and won't ever have somebody try to take your gun? Fine. Tree branch, desk, wall corner, low shelf. Don't need to get in a fight for one of these to rip your gun out and bang it all over the floor.

Most comfortable, easy releasing, retention holster on the market. No belt required.

I know he said no hard plastic, but with the suede lining you met every single one of his needs plus added retention. Great find. Now my only question is how he plans to keep his pants up with a Commander sized 1911 and no belt.

There are many, many holster makers. Google is your friend. But I can't even imagine someone asking about putting 2 lbs. on there side and not using a belt.

There are some really beautiful leather models - DanFL posted 1 - Andrews Leathers. I just added Jason Winnie holsters to my list. They look pretty nice too.

I just ordered an AlienGear holster yesterday Feb 7. Doesn't appear to be what you are looking for.

Here is a pretty complete list of mfgs. Lots of options.
