Default An old Horse comes Home

when i joined the army i gave my very first 1911 to my brother as he was joining the local sherriff office. it was an old 1970s colt series 70. i had bought it used in late 1989. it was in better shape back then. my brother wasnt kind to the old horse.

when i went back to texas a few weeks ago for dove season i got it back. it hadnt been cleaned since 1995 or so. so im surprised its in as good a shape as it is.

unfortunately my brother is a bit clumsy and put the mother of all idiot marks on the poor thing

here she is bottom center with her brethren.

top left 1944 ithaca, top right springfield armory 1911A1
bottom left new production colt series 70, bottom right colt new agent

older series 70 barrel stamp

new production stamp

side by side the old and the new

other than a few minor differences there is no discernable quality difference in the parts between the old and new series 70. colt unfortunately put plan grips on the new version leaving off the colt emblem. they also did not use the old finger bushing. the sights on the new series 70 are taller than the older one. the new colt has a throated barrel and the mags drop free. the older series 70 the mags do not drop free.

the newer series 70 are bit more refined but all parts are interchangeable.

im just happy to have the old horse home again!!

I know those old spring finger bushings did have their problems, but it seemed to me they aided accuracy. I think that was a concept that deserved more R&D rather than discarding. The old girl doesn't look that bad to me.

ive heard about those bushings breaking and all. but i sent a LOT and i mean a LOT of ammo down that barrel. ammo was cheap as hell back then.

im taking it out friday and doing a side by side with all the full size 1911s.

but the old girl is missing a lot of bluing and sports a few scratches. the grips arent in the best shape. but its not bad.

Looks very nice, despite the neglect.

It has character and a good story...I wouldn't change a thing.
