Non-.45 1911's?
Are there any 1911's that are not made for .45? Just wondering if they make them in 9mm or .380 or something like that. I do know there are some built for .357 Magnum and can also take .38 Special. I see they make .22 rimfire conversion kits also. Just wondering if any manufacturer makes them in 9mm or .40 S&W and what are the pros and cons of a non-.45 1911? Thanks.

Yes.
All the big makers produce both a 9mm and a .40S&W version of a traditional 1911 platform. My woman had a 4.25" inch 9mm 1911 that I had made for her from Nighthawk. Then the boating accident happened. JD |
I had a Springfield EMP that I reluctantly had to sell. It was a nice pistol.

Does Colt make any? I thought the Colt Commander (4 1/2" barreled 1911) was a 9mm.

Springfield Armory, Para-Ordnance, Nighthawk, and Kimber are a few brands that offer calibers other than .45 ACP for their 1911 handguns.

Browning was working for Colt, and had already designed an autoloader pistol, around a cartridge similar in dimension to the .38 Super. When the Army requested designs for a new handgun with a .45 caliber cartridge to provide adequate stopping power, Browning re-engineered this .38 autoloader to accommodate a .45" diameter cartridge of his own design with a 230 gr. FMJ bullet, and submitted the pistol to the Army for evaluation.
The rest, as they say, is history. It isn't a 1911 pattern pistol if it is chambered in anything other than the .45 ACP. |
