The tiny 1911s (3 or 3 1/2 inch bbl) tend to be about the crankiest I've seen. They are hard on springs and very sensitive to mags. I've owned a couple (Kimber & Springer) and I find no huge benefits over a 4 inch model. The last time Bud's had a 4 inch in stock it was $516.
Look at the small RIA guns, Cane recently posted about one that had a nice look and a nice price:

The RIA has much better sights, beavertail, etc. - for much less $$$...
