It's not so much about the look as it is about the grip. The front and back straps are where almost all if your grip force is applied and its an important part of recoil control as well.

A combat gun without front strap checkering is similar to a competition skateboard without traction tape. Makes no sense to me but I guess companies are getting away with it.
