What does the a-1 mean on those?

Those are the one and the numbers look good. I'll have a look up close and personal on saturday.

That makes since the Beretta M9 is military version M9A1 is civilian version.

A1 has nothing to do with the Civilian version. These two are referred to by Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc. as Military Variations.

Civilian offerings are referred to as Commercial Variations.

Well, after "seeing what my kimber is worth", he's back peddling. I still may do the trade because they both cost about the same new. Won't be any ct grips though.
