It's stamped Model of 1911 U.S. Army on one side of the slide and above the trigger it's stamped United States Property with serial number 539XXX below it.
So far, all I can find about it is that Colt made this particular gun sometime 1917-1918.
Apparently my grandfather had it chromed. I know that's reduced the value.
Any additional info on this would be greatly appreciated!!!

My girlfriends grandfathers is the same way (minus chrome) same number stamp same US stamp manufactured between the same years. That's all I can fin out about that particular model as well. Only other thing I know is that he was presented it when he was promoted to general.

It was built by Colt in 1919 in a production run of 48,900.
It is a M1911 and it's value is what ever you want to assign to it. Do yourself and your family a favor and record everything you can verify about this gun. Write it down and store it in a safe place.
I'm in a similar position with my father's M1911A1 Ithaca build. Once we're gone NO ONE will know the significance and sacrifice the owner has made/paid during their stewardship of this firearm. AND, understand we do not own these firearms, they are only now in our stewardship and will be handed down when our term expires.
