Yeah, more so than we could tolerate these days. The accidents of that era are what led to the safety precautions of this era!!
My grandad used to tell me stories about how it was normal for them to sometimes fire while people were downrange checking their targets.
Just freaking amazing... He said his drill sergeants would tell them not to worry about it, they needed to get used to getting shot at anyway.
