It's not about "bragging rights" at all. I prefer my 1911s to be capable of withstanding hard use and the ability to customize them as I see fit. I can do that with a Colt, Kimber, or Springer - I cannot do that with a Rock Island. I've seen way to many people try to make a Rock Island into something special and they are disappointed when they find out that the money they invested cannot be recovered. No matter how much money you invest in a $400 gun - it will always be a $400 gun. I just want folks to understand that.

If all you are looking for is a solid basic shooter and have no desire to build a custom gun - a Rock Island is a fine choice. If you think you may want to build something special - there are better, stronger platforms to start from - and they do cost more. If all any of us cared about was throwing lead downrange economically - we'd all just buy HiPoints and be done with it.

Forgive my repeated visits to this thread as I tend to get irritated when folks use terms like "bragging rights" to describe those of us that may invest a tad more in our choice of guns. I guess our moderators that own Colts and Nighthawks must really feel the need to brag...

Colt, Springfield, Para Ord, are all great 1911's. Fusions are really nice but it will cost you. Some Para's are pretty high too. But they will get on with the show. I'm no Kimber fan but they sell a lot of pistols. So they would be worth checking out.

I also if this was my first 1911 say get a full size. You will thank yourself later.

Ain't that true!?! I don't usually buy the very best. But I make it a point to spend as much money as I need to so I won't later curse myself for spending a little less and being thrice as unhappy.

I bought a Springfield Arms Loaded. I would have been even more happy with Kimber or Colt, but I am NOT unhappy.

I love my Colt XSE Combat Commander. It has been flawless with all makes of JHP.
I prefer 230gr Golden Sabres, and Gold Dot's. The Combat Commander has been flawless with these JHP's.
I have added night sights, and Wilson 47D magazines. I could not be happier with the quality, and reliability.

Default First 1911 commander

I would recommend you check out the Dan Wesson bob-tail commander. I've owned mine since 2005 and it is my EDC gun. The fit and finish on the Dan Wessons are about as good as it gets on a production pistol. Mine has been reliable and accrurate from day one and feeds any type of ammo I put in it. They are a little hard to come by and are a little above your price range but only by about $100 or so. I paid $875 and it was worth every penny.
