I think in this range you can go with Les Bear, Wilson Combat, Night Hawk, or even a fully custom built just as you say 1911 from many different 1911 smiths.

Check out 1911Forum - Powered by vBulletin they will be glad to spend your money on a $3000 1911.

Remington USR .308

$2800

Burris Extreme Tactical 6X-24X 50mm Optics

Probably close to $2800

Looks like I went Congressional on that $3000 budget!!!
I know it's not a 1911 cause I already have what I want in ....OK if I have to

Wilson Combat "Stealth" ~$3400 depending on configuration

Cane, that is an absolutely beautiful Hi-Power....man-o-man!

Is anyone familiar with a 1911 Custom that reduces the front of the slide to give it that Hi-Power look. I know I saw one in a magazine a few years ago, but haven't been able to track it down.

I have the privilege of having a good friend of mine as a pistol smith at Wilson Combat. I can personally say that the amount of time dedicated to make each pistol perform flawlessly is hard to imagine and well worth the price. I don't think that you could go wrong by spending your hard earned cash on pistol from them. I might be a little partial though!
