If you had $3,000 - how exotic would you go?
I just recieved a decent bonus from my employer and my first priority is a new 1911. I have owned several - all very practical - such as the Rock Island I own and love now... But, now I want the 1911 of my dreams to add to my collection... I want an EXTREMELY modified looking (extended barrel with compensator, custom millwork, etc. - I love the look of porting but have never shot a 1911 with reduced recoil)- yet EXTREMELY accurate firearm... I do not have much experience in high-end pistols and I am having trouble finding something that suits my tastes...

What would you choose to do with a $3,000 (or maybe a little more) budget? And what directions could you send me in for an top-notch performer, yet jaw dropping mantelpiece I can pass down through generations...

Thanks to all...

Plus a BIG one on Nighthawk Customs. I own three and every one of them is a tack driver.

I took my GRP through Valhalla's training center, where they use frangible ammo that I had never fired through the weapon before. The weapon performed flawlessly - so much so that the trainer was impressed and asked who made the weapon.

The weapon out shoots everything I have put it against and I know for a fact it is more accurate than I can shoot it.

Nighthawk has outstanding customer service - and all their parts they use are hand fitted. It's an outstanding product and I am 100% plus pleased with all three of my Nighthawk 1911's.

As for pricing - contact George from Michigan Gunslingers.

He ALWAYS has the best prices, as he is a master dealer, and he usually has a few in the pipeline already coming his way, so you might not have to wait too long.

Wow guys - nighthawk has just skyrocketed to just about the top of my list just from looking a little at that site...

I am curious to find out more about this "Every Damascus slide is unique.
No two look alike." thing... I couldn't seem to find anything about it on the nighthawk site...

The masters edition is really pushing my buttons...
NH-Masters - Masters Edition - Custom Guns - - Detail

I almost like the Kimber Eclipse series better though...
Kimber - Continuing The Legacy

and lastly so far - the BAER 1911 ULTIMATE MASTER COMBAT PISTOL COMPENSATED seems great - but only after some refinishing/milling...
Les Baer Special Purpose Competition Pistols

More suggestions? And opinions/experiences/trash talk with my top choices right now?

A new Sig GSR ( Granite State Rail 1911) - and still have $1500 left for ammo! The review of the GSR when it came out back in 2005? claimed 1" groups at 25 yds.

Can't go wrong with Nighthawk. At that level you have several excellent options. In addition to Nighthawk you can also look at Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Brazos Custom Gunworks, and STI's new custom option called the Infiite.

I'm too practical for spending alot of money on just one weapon.

I would buy a Kimber Tactical II for about 1,100 dollars. I would use an additional 400 dollars for extra magazines and any other accessories (holsters, etc...).

I would use the remaining 1,500 dollars this way:

1. Purchase a Ruger P345 (with some extra mags)

2. Purchase a Mossberg 12 Gauge (every .45 needs a 12 gauge to go with it)

3. Purchase a Ruger 22/45 for target practicing when the regular .45 ammo gets too expensive.

4. Use the rest of the money on ammo.
