I have owned and/or used the 1911a1 in .45 auto for almost 40 years along with a few 9mm's and even a .22 from time to time. The issue of larger capacity mags holding many more rounds is subjective as to your job. The average person does not need to fight a war with a handgun, so having 15 rounds in a mag is not necessary.

Most all encounters with a handgun for defense are over with no shots fired or within 3 shots. If you happen on a situation like the Los Angelus bank robbers who shot it out with the police using High Powered rifles, and wearing armor, then you need something way more powerful then a handgun.

Fusion Firearms and I believe STI make double stack 1911's, though I thing they call em 2011's... if you like that bigger grip feel.

You guys are always welcome. I will go to the range with just about anyone - provided you aren't a total Muppet.

Supporting Members get to shoot Big Thunder II though.

I'll extend the same offer to anyone in SE GA (near Savannah) that needs some trigger time with a variety of 1911s. I'm always glad to spread the disease...

I looked up the P-14 when another poster suggested that. It has to be double-stack, right? To get 14+1. A double stack has to mess up some of the ergos that are so vaunted in the 1911 platform. Am I missing something about that ParaOrdnance?

I'm still leaning toward the idea that 8+1 is just fine for most encounters, especially if I want my shots to count with the better aim possible on this platform. I can always carry a couple of extra mags, right?

Double stack (if that what gives the P-14 it's 14+1) would mess up the feel.

It fits MY hands perfectly, points naturally for ME. It might not work as well for you, but give it a try if you've got the chance.

I do think that the regular single stacks hold enough ammo, but I think it was Mas Ayoob who once wrote that nobody ever complained about having too much ammo in a fight.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, I'll take a nice blued classic 1911 with walnut stocks over anything else in the whole pistoldom.

The really neat thing about Para Ordnance P-14 is the fact that it was well thought out & designed so that it's not noticeably wider than a regular single stack 1911. They did this by thinning the frame (still plenty strong) & thinning the grip panels as compared to a regular 1911. I have big hands & still need oversized grips on the P-14 in order to fit my hands.

Judge dismisses lawsuit against gunmaker, S&W and Glock settle suit | Shooting Industry | Find Articles at BNET

"To no one's surprise, Glock sued Smith & Wesson in early 1994. claiming "tortious acts, including without limitations, patent infringement, federal unfair competition, common unfair competition and deceptive trade practices."

S&W returned the salvo with "We firmly believe the suit to be totally without merit and will act accordingly."

Glock also sent an ultimatum to its dealers, giving them 15 days to decide on which to ca,y, the Glock or the Sigma. "If your decision is to continue to distribute Smith & Wesson products, your contractual relationship with Glock Inc. will be terminated," read the message.

In the end, Smith and Wesson agreed to "remove the surface located below the sear in the Sigma Series Pistols, which Glock contends is a positive guide means, and Glock has agreed that such a modification would resolve the patent infringement claim."
