I recently purchased a Government Model MK IV series 80 from the wife of a friend who passed away. This is my first 1911. I took the gun to the range and fired one box of 230 gr. jhp and four rounds of 230 gr. Golden Saber. In cleaning the weapon I noticed that there was slight chipping on the tube end of the guide rod (standard). Is this normal wear. I have ordered a new 16# spring from Wilson Combat and a new guide rod from Midway. The friend that passed away shot this firearm with his own reloads indoors and I dought they were full power loads. Small man big gun. I do not know what recoil spring he had in the gun and its poundage. Do you think that a light spring/worn could produce this chipping.
I also replaced the collet bushing with a drop-in solid recently. Any input will help. I have a HI-Power that I can use for carry but I would like to trust this 1911. Thanks guys,

Welcome to the FTF. We have a section for "Introductions".

A #16 may be a little light for 230gr FMJ. An #18 may be a little better. If the recoil spring was not changed regularly and the firearm was subjected to "full power loads", there could be damage in that area. I would look at the slide near the dust cover to see if there are any hairline cracks or other evidence that the dust cover was hitting the frame.

If there is any marks that look like the slide was hitting, please take it to a smith for a checkout before shooting.

Be sure the recoil spring is installed correctly. There is a front and back to the spring.

Is the guide the standard GI shorty?

When the recoil spring is installed properly, it will tend to scratch the guide rod. Are you sure this isn't what you're looking at?

Thanks for the info. I saw that Video on the net last evening. The guide rod is a standard short. The damage I am noticing is a slight chipping on the rounded end of the guide rod. This would be the part facing the butt of the weapon. It is possible I may have had the spring reversed. I did not notice this damage in the initial dissasembly when I changed the barrel bushing but you have to look close to see it. Would a reversed spring cause this.
