|  GSG 1911-22 first impressions
this gun is very very well built for the 369$ i paid. however it has a few features that some may like but ones that really annoy me. off the bat its got a magazine safety, a full beaver tail grip safety (i find beavertails VERY uncomfortable), ambi-safety, and a firing pin safety. many o the parts are covered in white lithium grease. a thorough detailed stripping was neccessary to remove all traces of this junk.
it comes with a very nice instruction manual and a nice plastic hard case.
one of the nicer features is the firing pin area is a seperate block and held in by one pin. this block is easily removable for detailed cleaning. very similar to the ruger 10/22 bolt as shown:
i spent the evening familiarizing myself with the series 80 firing pin block system. the sear it is shipped with is not very good i had issues getting it back in working order after removing the firing pin safety. so i replaced the disconector and sear with spares. putting a mainspring housing and regular safety on order this weekend. the trigger has overtravel adjustment and is extended 3 hole.
trigger pull is pretty decent but the grip safety is pretty stiff a new sear spring would go a long way to rectifying it. it has two pins and one screw holding the barrel in place one pin is of course the slide lock. the other is unfortunately almost identical in size and feel to the sear pin. be very careful keeping them seperate as there is only a very slight difference that makes it sit a fraction higher than the sear pin if mistakenly interchanged.
sights are very cheap plastic but novak cut so better sights could liekly be easily installed. the slide is aluminum and spray painted the frame feels like its metal injection molded but of very sturdy build. the aluminum slide worries me a touch. it has an internal extractor so it should be pretty reliable on extraction. grip screw bushing dont tighten very well and need a little loctite to keep them in place when removing the grips. it also has a semi recessed firing pin and can be safely dry-fired
overall i rate it pretty high in quality it should be a nice shooter. cant wait to get it to the range. __________________

Great write up Jon. I've had mine for a while now and still love it. Find someplace with extra mags in stock and order several, the one mag that comes with it just isn't enough. 10 rounds of .22lr is gone in a heartbeat and it's reload time again.
Brian, while I didn't shoot the Chiappa, I did handle and look at both when I bought my GSG. The Chiappa just felt cheap in comparison to the GSG. Not as well finished or as smooth in the few function checks you can do a the counter in a gun shop. It may be a fine pistol and my impression could be wrong, but that's how I felt. | |
