Default Grips?

I am amped because I am finally after years of waiting fixing to purchase my first 1911! My only question is are most grips universal or do you have to get them custom made or from the manufacturer?

67,

Generally you will have to buy them to fit the specific manufacturers 1911 Model unless they are built to the standard specs of the full size Browning/ Colt 1911 Design. Many companies keep their specs regarding grips pretty much standard to the Colt 1911s. Then of course you have the full sized 1911s and the Compacts which take different grips than the full size.

As far as I have heard, today's manufacturers build their 1911 series to accept after market grips. There's a thread somewhere here with claims that some of Para's models do not. I don't know because I don't own any Paras. I know that several years ago Llama made a so-called 1911, branded as Firestorm, with the grip screws spaced so that it would not accept aftermarket grips, but they are out of business now. The late Firestorms, made in the Philipines did use spec grips.
