Ruger's SR1911 runs about $700. Great gun, if you can find one (not easy). Then you've got entry level Springfields, the Para GI Expert, and Rock Island (which might leave you a couple hundred bucks for ammo).

Bud's has the Remington R1 "Enhanced" for $738 right now. I'd imagine it's a lot of 1911 for that price.

I got my springfield milspec for $640.

+1 for Rock Island. Lots and lots of bang for your buck.

I recommend the PT 1911, it offers the most bang for the money, comes with a forge slide ,forge frame,(emphasis on forge) stainless match barrel, completely enhanced, and it's under $650.

Heinie Straight Eight sights (current models come with Novak sights)
Checkered 30-lpi trigger guard, mainspring housing, and frontstrap
Ambidextrous safety
Beavertail grip safety with memory pad
Target Hammer
Skeleton trigger
Polished throat and feedramp
Lowered and flared ejection port
Custom internal extractor
Extended magazine release
Beveled magazine well

I've put over 18K reliable rounds through mine, with all the original stock equipment, and I highly recommended it. Love it.

shoot safe, shoot straight, and have fun.

The places that have them in stock don't sell them under $700. Maybe that is why they are in stock.

Cabela's, Gander Mtn., & Scheels have the SR1911 in stock, $749 and up.

MetroArms American Classic goes for around $500. STI Spartan goes for $635. I have American Classiic in 45 and my STI is a 9MM. Both are accurate as you can get, no problems at all. As for me, I couldn't find better guns, just more expensive guns.
