I have an ATI, it was about $500, like you I wanted a 1911 to plink with. It functions flawlessly but the finish isn't great. There are others in this price range but I don't have experience with them. Taurus makes a good one but is above your price range new.

The PT1911 is a good pistol.

I'd just add a little to that $500 and pick up the Ruger 1911. I've seen em for $579 in Georgia so shop around for one.

My eventual plan is to get a Fusion firearms longslide 1911 in 10mm to use for hog hunting but for now I just want a gun to get used to the platform and to practice with.

There is only one gun range around here that rents guns and all of their 1911's are worn out and always dirty.

Also I am a lefty so an ambi safety is a must for me.

What are yalls suggestions?
I have a taurus pt 1911 an it's been flaw less with over 600 rounds down range. Works great for left handed shooters as well. The only bad I can say is the blueing could be better but it has NEVER malfunctioned in anyway. So for $500 iam very pleased with the pt.

And every bit as good as his Springfield Loaded Trophy Match. Its just not near as nice. All total, we had 4 1911s out that day, and the RIA functioned and shot just as good as everything else. (The supplied mag does seem like junk tho, as most reviews state. I havent tried to use it yet.)
I am surprised at your comment about the RIA magazine. I believe you; maybe you got a bad one. The stock mag that came with my RIA has been very reliable so far and I have used it in Colts and Springfields.
Everyone swears by Wilson Combat mags. I have a few and they are excellent. IMO, there are other good mags for a lot less $$ than the Wilsons.

in all honesty, i find the mags supplied with many 1911's to be somewhat inferior. i only use mine for practice and buy either Wilson Combats or Chip McCormacks for regular use.

the mag is not what i am buying the pistol for, so it's not being perfect doesn't bother me in the least.

There is nothing wrong with a pre owned 1911. I've never had a bad experience with one. One caveat: pre owned is one thing; cobbled together is another. If it's a built gun, make sure it came from someone who knew their business.
The worst 1911s I ever shot were the ones we had in the Marine Corps. They were from WWII most likely and it was the ultimate mix and match of parts. They were very loose.
A factory gun, new or pre owned, with original parts will be a good shooter IMO.

I have no complaints with the Wilsons and I don't know about the McCormacks. I do have some mags from years ago that with McCormack springs and followers. They still work after several years.

even my Remington R1, had inferior mags. i even compared them with a fellow member's mags from his R1. both of them were not what i feel confident in for long term usage. he is also buying new mags.

but as i stated, i didn't buy any of my 1911's for the mags, but for the pistol. i always buy more mags anyways.

I don't use any of my factory mags. Either for my colt or my loaded springer. I replaced them very quickly with wilson mags. I think they are in the back of the safe somewhere or in my spare parts box. I have never even fired a round from any of them. I keep them just in case but as you said it. I didn't buy the gun for the mags.
