What are YOU looking for in a 1911? Full sized? Carry model? Do you want steel frame & slide? Aluminum? 8+1 Rounds? 7+1 Rounds? Are you left handed and/or needing an ambi safety?

$800 is a good chunk of change and there are a ton of 1911's in this category that could treat you right.

Help us help you!

I am wanting a full size, and I am left handed

I have a Taurus 1911, it gave me fits until it was broken in but has since been 100% reliable. Comes with ambi safety.
Just passing through...

Dillinger has some important factors for you to consider and i will make this suggestion, read Canebrake's sticky note on choosing your first 1911. he has put together some really good information that could help you make a better informed dicision on your first 1911.
i haven't personally had a lot to do with the STI pistols, i have heard many glowing reviews from those who have and haven't really heard anything negative about them. many have suggested the RIA brand and i too find it to be a very good choice and had one ordered personally. MetroArms American Classic is another good choice, in your budget of $800, you could also check out the Remington R1, which i have and find it to be a very good pistol and very accurate. Springfield Armory is another good choice and i own one of those too, and have had many of them over the years without any problems. another good choice would be a used Colt. if you happen to find one, it too would be a good one to own.

read the sticky notes and then come back with more details of what you are looking for and we will be glad to help you spend that $800!

So you need a full sized, 5", Ambi safety. That narrows the field, but it also increases your choices.

The Taurus comes with a ton of standard features, has the full sized frame, ambi safety and is a really good weapon for the price. I came into one, dumped the hollow, Saf-T-Hammer and the Ambi Safety for a right handed shooter and the thing has been a BEAST! Benning Boy carries it daily and loves it.

$800 can get you a ton of pistol in this market, but the Ambi safety is going to be somewhat more difficult to find on the used market. It's not like you are going to find a Les Baer or Nighthawk in the consignment market with an ambi safety under $800. :roll eyes:

I would examine a few brands like Taurus, like Rock Island Armory, like Auto-Ord, and Kimber. See if any of those really speak to you.

I had a Kimber Raptor II that had an Ambi Safety and I carried that for well over a year. It was a great gun and shot REALLY well. It was more than your price range when I bought it and I sold it for more also. You might be able to find it used though in the $800 range.

Good luck!
