For my first gun I'm looking for a 1911 style gun either 4 or 5 inches.
the ones I'm looking at are:

Springfield 1911-A1 .45ACP Loaded 5", Black-stainless target

or,

The Dan Wesson commander 4" .45ACP stainless

mainly it will be used for target shooting and very minimal carry.
any ideas on which one for a good reliable first gun choice?

i don't have experiece with dan wes, but i know springs are reliable and affordable...plus you can add on as you go for little $ and minimal (if any) gunsmithing...

i own a spring mil-spec myself, bought it for $600 new, which came with a beveled out well, and polished feed ramp-good stuff to have with any 1911!

added a guild rod (in my opinion, a must) for @ $30 and a comp for @ $70, next thing you know, i have a hell of a machine for less then $750!..i'll be adding a 8rd mag next-not bad if i may say so myself

never had any problems with the springfield-no ejection problems, feeding related problems, accuarcy problems, disassembly/reassembly problems at all

I own a SA (I like it immensely) but I would pick the DW over it given the price point for the main reason of a better fit in frame to slide. Nothing wrong with the SA but I do believe the DW is a better fit and finished weapon.

Dan Wesson 1911s, even though owned by Česká Zbrojovka, are made in the good ole USA with top grade parts. Check www.czcustom.com for a decent price.

Just bought the Dan Wesson and I have the Springfield V10 Loaded. I personally think the DW is a much better shooter and is better made when it comes to fit and finish.
