Default Compact 1911 Problem?

I have a Colt Defender that has never jammed and has been a great carry piece since its purchase. Recently my cousin and I were testing out his new high-speed camera on firearms. Trying to catch the action cycling and what-not.

I fired at least 150rds through my defender:
Attachment 14326

Most of the muzzle flashes looked like this:
Attachment 14327

but on one a single round, this was the flash:
Attachment 14328

I am worried that this means that the barrel is unlocking from the slide too early and the pressure is not dropping before it unlocks. I will say that whatever this was, it did not jam the gun and I did not even notice it until I reviewed the video at home.

Am I worrying over nothing?

Were you using factory loads or reloads?

This wasn't by chance Magtech Ammunition was it?

Ask gorknoids about the light show we had using it!

It actually was magtech ammo the 45A, I think. It's their 230gr. FMJ (FMC?) load

Although I'd keep my eye on the Defender's function, and close inspection to the "usual suspects" of early wear, I wouldn't worry much. Did you collect your brass? If so, check for primer blowout. (Could be a head-space issue) If not, you should see evidence of this ejection port flash on the exterior of the case. Check for case splitting or head separation. It may have been a weak case.

Magtech is the WORST ammo I've shot for slow-burn high-visibility muzzle flash. Not the ammo you want in your EDC unless you only carry in daylight.

It is however, my favorite ammo to shoot for fun at night. Great ammo for impressing small children and large pets!

It's my guess that what you caught on slow-mo was this 'after-burner' on its way to the range floor.

Looking forward to more slow-mo gun porn.

Nice job mesinge2,

NOTE: Is your Defender on the recall list? Defender (O7000D) From: DR33036 To: DR35948 If not, no problemo, if yes, was it done?

My SN is in the 38000 range. I did collect the brass and it looks fine, may have missed a few. However, as I did not even know there was a "problem" until I got home I don't know which case it was.

If you looked through the spent brass and nothing jumped out at you I wouldn't worry. Just shoot up the remaining Magtech and buy some WWB for your movie makin'. (Unless you like the light show.)

Thanks for the help. I was probably just worrying over nothing.

Have you replaced recoil spring lately? Compacts need the spring changed sooner than full size.

Not yet but I only have about 400 rounds down the barrel, could it already need a spring change?

Sorry, I thought you had more rounds through it. No, you should not need a spring change yet. Maybe in another 2500 rounds. I know it's kind of hard indoors, but try to keep an eye on where the casings eject to, and the angle to the rear. Different ammo may need a different weight spring. Your original spring may be set up for the 230gr going about 780fps. I think Magtech's 230gr is a little faster. Do you have a chrono?
