I have a Kimber Custom (series 1) and it is the most accurate handgun I own. It has never failed to feed or go bang... I can't speak to the Colt as I don't have one, but the Kimber's enjoy quite a following and I can't see them being so popular without a good reason.

I think you should go to a range and try to test fire each platform and decide once you have used both. I'm sure you will find they are comparable and brand preference and price will be the biggest determining factors as to which one you end up taking home. Either way, I'm sure you will end up with a quality weapon that if taken care of will never let you down.

I'm not sure I understand why you are comparing a Colt without a laser to a Kimber with a laser. I'm not a laser fan anymore, myself.

Neither of my Kimber 1911's (Pro TLE II and Ultra Raptor II) have a laser.

I'd spend that $200-300 on a higher model of Kimber and/or break-in ammo.

Don't forget that Kimber suggests 500 rounds to break in and the Colt doesn't. That cost makes a difference, too.

My Kimber Pro Crimson Carry II was junk. It would not feed the last round out of the magazine no matter what brand magazine I used. After a trip to Kimber for warranty repairs it still wouldn't feed the last round, and now it jammed a high percentage of the time. Yes, I did give it a more than adequate break-in (800+ non-walmart rounds) before contacting Kimber, and yes, after the third trip in for repairs, they did refund my purchase price.

Since just about every gun forum has a story like mine concerning Kimber, I would go with the Colt

I had a pro carry II stainless, and I had the same problem as you. Even after a feed ramp polish and re-throated chamber, it still jammed 2-3 rounds per mag.

Default Kimber and Colt

Do yourself a favor and look at the Dan Wesson 45's. I've HAD a Kimber, not worth the cost. I'm sure you can make a Gold Cup as good as a factory Dan Wesson after a few trips to a custom gunsmith.

When you say Kimber, which model? I like my Gold Cup, but I prefer my Kimber Eclipse Target, maybe because I really like the black stainless on the Eclipse. Either one are excellent shooting pistols, but why the laser?

I personally would buy the Colt. Kimbers are cool (never owned or shot one much) but the Colt has several advantages.

1) It will hold it's value better
2) It's a Colt
3) It is 100% American
4) It's a Colt
5) It will come with the best customer service
6) It's a Colt

If you buy the Kimber it will want to be a Colt when it grows up

I went ahead and got both the Colt Commander 4" and the Kimber ultra crimson carry II 3". I got the laser on the kimber because I never have had a pistol with a laser on it. I plan on shooting them this weekend and will give a range report. I will post some pics as soon as I learn how to do it. Thanks, Ed
