I have a colt defender that does not always extract spent shells. The gun is not that old with less than 2000 rounds fired cleaned after each use.Does any body have a remedy

I can give you a possibility.
Do you always load with a magazine? Or do you drop a round in the barrel and let the slide go forward (forcing the extractor to go over the rim of the case)?

If you do the latter (and sometimes it takes only once), the possibility of the extractor losing its "tune" is most likely the fault.

The cure is to have someone look at the extractor (and possibility replace it) and never do that sloppy loading procedure.

Why not try tuning the extractor yourself?

Nothing is required but your hands, the slide, the extractor, 1 round of ammo and some patience, care and observation.

Google yields a ton of how to's and videos.

ps: I tuned one at the range this year, so I could immediately test out my results. It took me 2 attempts to get acceptable results, but the whole operation took less than 15 minutes for test fire, field strip, adjustment, re-assembly, test fire again and satisfaction.
