Building a 1911 out of old parts?
I've been seeing busted 1911s here and there and thought I'd find a few junkers from good brands and put something together. Or am I just dreaming?

Go for it.

Just remember that "building a 1911" is NOT the same in skillz or effort as assembling an AR.

To get the gun to run you will need some smithing talent and a complete understanding of the platform.

Just curious, you really finding broken 1911? And what's broke?

All depends on what you mean by busted. Obviously a cracked frame or slide is useless as is a shot out barrel. Most, if not all small parts and springs are cheaply and easily replaced by the owner. What you may wind up with is a pile of marginally useful parts costing about the same or more than a NIB gun. YMMV.

I've seen kits (complete minus frame) on Ebay. I was kind of thinking about the same build.

I found a colt with a rusted barrel and a Smith and Wesson with a busted slide at a couple pawn shops around here. I live in Georgia so finding guns is easy. My second favorite part of guns (besides shooting) is taking them apart, so I'll enjoy it regardless. Maybe I can experiment on my Frankenstein gun until I get bored. It's not like I'm concerned about breaking it.

I say go for it. But first, I suggest you get a copy of "The Colt .45 Automatic - A shop Manual" By Jerry Kuhnhausen, and read it before you get started. If you're still game after reading it, enjoy.

Be careful, have patience, and get to know the firearm.

Buying the book is great advice. Don't be cheap on the internals. Some places offer kits (frame or slide), and almost everyone of these kits has a part or two that is not in specs.
