Wonder if taurus will ever make a smaller 1911, maybe for carry?

What about para ordnance? They seem to be decent guns at a lower price.

Norinco?

You and I are in the same boat. Taurus may make a nice 1911, but I want a 4" or less. Anyone out there?

I'd recommend Para Ordnance or Springfield for what you want (4-4 1/4"). Kimber is good but likely just above the price range you're wanting to keep it at. Para-Ordnance, High-Quality Handguns: Products

Default 22 conversion problems

Taurus makes a very nice 1911 but the Kimber 22 conversion slide does not work with it so if you think you might want a conversion that is something to consider.

Same price range?? Or just the best for the criteria?

A fella I know just bought a new Springer GI Champion for less than $500. This meets the size criteria but it is a basic GI-spec gun - but it is a Springer. The Rock Island Compacts are also nice guns at sub $500 and I had one for a while. Many of the sub-5 inch 1911s deviate a bit as they use bushingless bull barrels. I had a Kimber and a Springer that were both built this way. They were good shooters but it just depends on what you're looking for. A few companies make Commander-sized guns with 4 1/4 bushed barrels (my preference) Colt and Para (the LTC) come to mind.

Just looked at one of my local stores with decent pricing and Taurus is near $600 for their base model - not the budget gun they once were. Lots of used ones on the market though for less. You choose, pay near $600 for the Taurus or pay $700 for a new Colt Commander as I did. Yes the Taurus will have all the bells & whistles (that you may or may not want) but it will never be a Colt.

For a carry 1911, I find my Commander is just right and I don't need or want a big beavertail, ambi-safties, or other non-necessary stuff...

I just recently picked up a Para GI Expert for $465 at my local shop. I looked at it and the Taurus both and chose the Para for it's classic lines and the good reviews I've read. I only have a few boxes through it but it has had zero issues and is a nice shooter right out of the box. The only thing I've done is replace the hard plastic grips with a set of Pachmayr American Legend grips and bought a couple Chip McCormick 10rd. mags to go with the two stainless 8rd. mags it coms with. I'm no 1911 expert (this is my first) and I'm obviously a newbie here, but the Para gets two thumbs up from me for a budget 1911.

Marstar Canada: Norinco 1911A1 Series Handguns

All less than $400 But you can't import them due to the embargo!!

That's a damn shame on that embargo chit. I would like to spring for one of those 1911's, at those prices and see how they would stand up.
