| Best 1911
I decided that I want a Colt 1911 and was wondering which one would be best for something along the lines of a competition gun or a just for fun gun. The ones I looked at are the 1991 series, XSE series, series 70, or the gold cup series.
Any advice? __________________ Aaron

Woodworker,
Please let us know what price range you are focusing on! 1911 Pistols and for sure those who are accurate enough to compete with are not cheap but still span a significant price range depending on the manufacturer, features and accuracy factors.

I'm wanting to buy one thats unmodified in the price range of $1200. (most of the ones I listed fall under this price range). I'm not wanting to get one that has been designed just for competition yet, I'm really just wanting one that will get me started in competitions and if that doesn't work out, will be a good gun for fun at the range. __________________ Aaron

Thats what I was leaning toward but wasn't sure it was the best.

Cane will be by to give you a more educated opinion than I have. But if I could afford the Gold Cup, that's what I'd buy. |

If your choices are limited to Colts, then Gold Cup.
(Although Dan Wesson's can be had for approx the same $.) __________________ Murphy's law has not be repealed.

Well, first decide what you want and why you want it.
Do you want all black target sights? White dot sights? Is it for defense? For just a range toy? __________________ The Beretta 92 - The OFFICIAL handgun to combat German terrorists in multi-floor buildings ***

Competition; hands down, the Gold Cup. It has the "good" parts required to make it worth the premium. Match grade barrel, target grips, Bomar target sights, wide target trigger, full length guide rod and two recoil springs (light weight target installed and a standard weight - read the manual!).
REMEMBER: Gold Cups are set up at the factory to shoot 185gr semi wadcutters at about 750fps and they are shipped with the appropriate recoil spring weight. If you are going to shoot any heavier (hardball) loads you must swap out the recoil spring or you will beat up the gun!
Fun gun; the XSE. My SS 5" Government XSE shoots far better than me and has been reliable as any gun I have owned.
Both are within your price point and I'm sure you will be happy with either. __________________ .

Thanks for the advice, I'll think about it a while first then make my decision. __________________ Aaron
