thank you Shawn. here's an update to the progress so far. i bead blasted it a few more times after sanding out some areas that needed attention. the finish i was hoping for was a matte black finish. well it came out with more of a distressed or well used look to the blueing. undecided as to whether i will keep it like this or possibly bead blast it once more and go for a matte black in Duracoat. would like some feedback and suggestion on this and what color grip to use. any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated. here are a few pictures of it partially assembled to give an idea as to what it looks like. thank you to all who have had some very kind words of encouragement.

I think i'd add more coats of blue -It'll be matte no matter how many but it shud darken & even it up.

Yep. Was gonna ask how many coats you had on it and what blue you are using. Might take 4-5 coats or more to get it where you want it.
Maybe heat the parts in the oven set on its lowest temp for just a few mins until they are warm to the touch. Really seemed to help when I blued my old winchester barrel.

actually i did blue it five times! heating the parts each and everytime in the oven at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. i think it has something to do with the hard chrome finish they put on it at the factory. i am oubtful any more coatings of blueing will darken it much more than it is now. i fully believe that to obtain the matte black finish i had expected, it will have to be Duracoated or something similar. but honestly, the more i look at it, the more i am liking how it turned out. even my wife thought it looked unique and good!

well i finally got a chance today to finish putting the Commander back together. it came out much better than i expected and shot beautifully! functioned perfectly also. going to use these grips for now, until i make a final decision as to which grips i will use permanently. here are some before and after pictures.

no this was the blued version. i decided after several people, including the wife really liked the aged and sort of used distressed look, that i would stay with it for a while. i can always Duracoat it later if i change my mind. one of my friends at work suggested stag horn grips to really set it off.
