Advantages of 1911
What advantage does the 1911 platform have over the XD? Seems they have a similar grip angle and grip safety, though the XD has more modern polymer technology. Seems it takes a lot of money to get one worked just right.
The XD would be lighter for carry purposes. What are your thoughts? Are there many polyner framed 1911s that woiuld help lighten it up and modernize an antiquated pistol? Seems all you should need is a C&R license to buy one the design so old.

The 1911 is thinner for one.
What disadvanrage does a 1911 have over any other pistol? None.

Steel.
For some that is a negative, but I love how steel absorbs recoil so well and helps for follow-up shots.
Interchangeability of parts.
If something breaks on an XD, you can't go to your Glock and switch out a part. But 1911's can share parts, for the most most. There are exceptions, but across the board this is a huge benefit, especially in a SHTF situation.
Customization.
It is really easy to purchase grips, safeties, triggers, hammers, etc. that will make your 1911 a one-of-a-kind. XD's are pretty limited. You can throw on a Hogue slip-on grip, but that's about it, right?

Wilson Combat, STI, Fusion Firearms are three that have a poly frame on some of their handguns. I have not tried a poly framed 1911, but I have had a Aluminum Framed 1911. Though that was early in my 1911 days, I still wish I did not have to sell that one.

I think that Kimber made a polymer framed 1911 variant as well, but I myself have never cared that much for plastic guns.

I've been a 1911 fan for years. I feel like the weight of a polymer .45 with a hi cap mag is about the same weight as a 1911 with 8 rounds on board. The recoil of a steel 1911 is usually percieved to be less than a polymer .45 ..... that generally results in faster follow-up shots.
Antiquated pistol ? Hmmmm... well, I'd be real interested in seeing another antiquated pistol (or any other kind of pistol) that has the history, the distinction, and longevity of use, that the 1911 enjoys. What other handgun has been in production for over 100 years? If handguns survive long enough for Glocks to see 100 years of use, I'll bet dinner that the 1911 will still be around as well.
