Ill be purchasing my first 1911 and want to know which is better in all your opinions. I can purchase the gun with fixed night sights or get adjustable night sights for $20 more. All I own are fixed so please voice your opinion.

IMHO, if you're getting a target gun go for the adjustable. If its for carry & defense, I'd say siglight fixed.

I'd like to use it for both defense and range. Are they fragile? Do they break easily? This is my first 1911 and don't want to end up with sights I'm not happy with

Typical target sights may snag on things. If "defense" means nightstand drawer, then it might not be a problem. If it means carry gun, then fixed are the better choice.
Then of course there is the other issues. Three dot? Three Dot Night Sights and so on. Black target sights might not be your first choice when responding to a bump in the night.

Fixed sights are excellent if you reload or plan on using only one load. When point of aim equals point of impact - Life is good and your done.

If you practice w whatever's on sale or use different brands, loads etc., adj sights can be a Godsend.

Quality adj sights usually cost $80-$140 and are made from a single piece of bar stock steel. Example - Champion which is also used by Les Baer. Bomar cut is approx $50 or more for machining.

Adj sights will also improve the resale value of firearm.

Note: sight pushers or the old mallet & brass punch will cost you more than $20.

Don't know about the Sig "target" guns but the Colt Gold Cup comes with two recoil springs. A low recoil spring for target loads and a standard recoil spring for standard load rounds.

I would never use my target 1911 for PD or CCW. It's not designed to fire/load HP's and hot loads. It's designed specifically for 230gr ball ammo. I've never known a paper target that required a hot load hollow point to raise your score.

If Sig is selling a gun with "target" in its model name and they tell you it's OK to shoot all types of ammo I've got a Peterbilt Corvette you may be interested in.

No so much fragile as holster unfriendly. Harder to whip out, more likely to snag. I prefer target (adjustable sights) but most of my guns are for the range.

I believe that adjustable sights are great for the range and if u r proficient with trigger pull. If u r not consistent with ur shooting adjustable sights mean nothing. If u r a novice keep it simple.

You can and will get more use from a gun with Adj. sights. Everytime this comes up the experts fill the grave yards with snagged hand guns. Target pistols can be modifed for field use as well. I have an old Gold Cup that was worked over as a carry gun and it has been great. New loads and changing bullet weights makes the Adj. sights a bargain.
