so this is a novice question but i have two 1911s one is a colt 7rd and the other a tauris 8rd when looking at the mags side by side i see no size differnce from the two. so can i load a 8rd mag in to my colt seires 80 and vise a versa? Thank you for your help.

Sure you can. Externally the 7 & 8 round mags are the same dimensions. The changes to make a 7 rounder into an 8 rounder were internal with the spring and follower. I won't guarantee you it work reliably though as each 1911 tends to like what it likes.

Case in point are Tripp mags - generally considered top of the line. I had a S&W 1911 that would operate flawlessly with Wilsons and McCormicks and would jam constantly with Tripps. Find the mag brand and style your gun likes and stick with it...

That's because the Tripp Cobra mag is made for a 1911 pattern pistol!

I use Tripp Gen 2 Cobra Mags in my Colt's and have NEVER had an issue!



Call Tripp Research (1-877-837-9445), ask for Aaron and have him tell you the difference between a 7 round mag made to work as a 8 round and and an 8 round mag designed from the get-go. Or better yet, ask for Virgil Tripp and get the info from the horses mouth!

Tell him you got the phone number from the FTF! Tell him he needs to become a vendor here.

OBTW, give Bill Wilson (870-545-3635) or Chip McCormick (830-798-2863) a call and compare notes. I betcha you never talk to either one of them!

In my carry piece, I will run nothing but Cobra Mags!

I've always used 7 round Colt and Chip McCormick mags in both my Colt 1911 series 70 match gun and my Para 7-45 LDA carry gun. All my mags, Colt, CM, and Para will be getting tripp followers and springs in the near future. I might be wrong, but I believe that in the same distance mag - the 7 round is probably more reliable.
