God forgive you mentioning Glock in your question. On to the answer...

Colt, Springfield, Remington, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Dan Wesson.

That's the start of the list. I'll let others add to it. There are a lot of companies out there making some very good 1911's. Everything from Rock Island Armory on the low end of the price range to Les Baer on the higher end.

Sig Sauer's 1911 is top notch. You get quality, reliability, great parts, and they look sexy. I love mine. It can with 4 Mags, night sights, mag well and extended mag release.

I'd look for a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec 1911. Best bang for the buck. Should be able to find one for under $700.

I agree with ScottA but LB is far from the top end. Wilson, Nighthawk, and Guncrafter are more money and a little better. For a pass down gun Colt is my choice as I have 3 earmarked for my 3 grandsons so far. More kids means more Colts.

I've shot 1911s all my life and I love this one...Springfield Armory GI Champion 4", walnut grips, parkerized finish.

There are tons of good 1911's. Even my (Oh God No) it's a Taurus has been flawless through thousands of rounds. I'm partial to Springfield mainly. Also Colt, Para Ord, Remington, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Dan Wesson, Smith and Wesson,RIA

I'm sure there are others that I'm just brain farting on at the moment.
