Figure out how much you'd like to spend first. I'm assuming you're not looking to spend over $1k.

$400-600
RIA- Rules the budget 1911 market, and has a loyal following.

$600-1000(that I'm impressed with)
Springfield
Colt
Sig
Ruger

(other options)
Taurus
Para Ordnance
Kimber
Remington
S&W

$1000+
Take your pick

SA Loaded offers one of the best value buys in a better than "entry level" 1911 in my novice opinion. I'd like to add one myself. And a Colt, and a Sig and a DW, LOL.

I just picked up Ruger SR1911 for $699, which I'm very happy with.

Springfield mil-spec .45 is the one I've been looking at. Then a gentleman at Cabelas showed me the High Standard.
I haven't read anything bad yet about the HS. Thought I'd ask you folks.

That springfield is the one I got. I've had it since Tuesday, and I'm in love with it. I haven't even shot it yet, I plan on doing that tomorrow.

It is $699 at Cabelas. The parkerized version is $629.
Seems to be a good price.
$499 for the High Standard.

Default 1911

I have several Springfield 1911's, as well as Kimber's, Colt's, S&W's,Sig's and a Dan Wesson V-Bob. For a first 1911, I would most definitely go with the Springfield. They're reasonably priced, accurate as hell, durable and they offer several models. A friend of mine has left his Ruger 1911 with me while he does a tour in Afghanistan and I love it. It's less expensive than most of the Springfield's, shoots as well as any of my Springfield's and I hope to have my own by the time he gets back. But if you go with a Springfield, you won't regret it.
