The 1911 no collection can be without
I know I'm going to get a lot of opinions here, and that's okay.
I've decided to collect 1911s. After owning many handguns, I've finally come to realize that there are none that I like any better than a 1911...for many reasons, as most of you know.
So far, I have a Kimber Tactical Custom II, a Kimber Grand Raptor II, and a Taurus PT1911 (my first, the one that got me hooked).
Which 1911 would my collection not be complete without? And please don't tell me it needs to be something gold-plated. I have some money, but I'm talking about a pistol that's classic, functional, dependable, exceptional quality....and something that's great to look at.

I'll beat Cane to the punch with a simple answer - a Colt. It's the original and everything else is but a copy. What's not to love?

That is the quandry for sure. My only Colt is the Commander pictured above. I already had a nice selection of 5 inch models so it was a natural choice. Had an unfired Gold Cup Trophy for a short time but it was just to pretty to shoot and since I detest safe queens I sold it...

And your Commander is a great-looking piece. How much can I expect to pay for a new one?

If you are looking to collect, but still want to shoot, look around for a pre-war commercial government model. They are really nice.
And in a pinch, a Pre-Series 70 Gov't model is not too bad either. Plenty of those come up on GB.

An original Colt M1911A1. They are still around if you look close enough, and most of them I've seen are still in good condition.
Of course, if you are wanting something of the uber bad a** variety, and you have the cash, go for something that Nighthawk has to offer.

My collection and IMHO no gun collection would be complete without a M1911A1 or just a M1911 like my avatar.
This was my Dad's M1911A1 carried from Normandy on D-Day to Dachau April 1945.
Of course the more providence the better!

I am actually going to agree 100% with Cane on this one. If you are having a TRUE 1911 collection, you need an original, and KEEP IT ORIGINAL, Colt M1911A1.
That was the 'piece that launched a million copies' so to speak.
Now, if you want a real show pony that will make men want to be you and make women NEED to sleep with you.....
I give you about $15K in one very pretty case.
