Trying not to spend a pile of cash here, so we will be looking for a good middle of the road fun to shoot gun.
Of course unless I'm mistaken if I get a good gun to start with. We can always upgrade bits and pieces as we go.
IMO......I would not touch a Kimber unless your up for the risk of getting a good one, and are willing to put 500 rounds of precious ammo/money down range.

There are many good ones,my first choice would be STI,followed by Colt.
This may be due to having two STI's and one Colt.

So, what I gather from this, and please correct me if I'm mistaken. Get a 1911, however much we choose to spend, regardless of make. And I (or she, since its for my wife) will probably love it.
I guess our next stop is to PSA to feel a few of em up.
Thanks for the input.

You're already in the Springfield XD camp. You could do a lot worse than a Springfield Armory 1911. Mine has been great. I'd also recommend Colt.
Most Kimber owners seem happy, My only complaint with them is the one year warranty.
If you can find a (most likely used) Dan Wesson in your price range, you will very likely be pretty happy. My last two 1911s have been DW.

Does nobody like Springfield either? I am looking to buy a used one here soon

Man, people love springfield, I just neglected to mention it. I've got a line on one right now for 400, I'm just holding out for a Colt. But, if I don't get the Colt, Springfield is very affordable for my broke @$$. And very good quality too, even Cane likes them.

It's all good. Whatever works for you after shopping around. Lots to choose from. I love SA - have one & it's great. I also have an Ed Brown and love it as well.
