I rarely hear anything bad about Wilsons, Chip McCormicks, or Tripps/Cobra. I have Tripps for my 1911. I just bought my dad a pair of McCormicks for his new 1911.

I've seen cheaper mags run just fine. But I wouldn't open my wallet for anything but the above three, given the reputations they've earned. Whether you've got a $300 1911 or a $3000 piece, your gun is only going to be as reliable as the mags feeding it.

I agree. I have had the cheap GI's fall apart while shooting, fake Colts shake apart. Bought an extra magazine that was a Wilson Combat when I got my Kimber. I now have six of them. Eight rounders all of them, best thing I ever fell into. They are solid and well made. I feel like my life might depend on them, I want the best.

1911 mag question - 1911 Forum

Tripp Research Inc. 1911 Magazines Call Aaron @ Tripp (877.837.9445) and order one. (Tell him canebrake said hi.)

From L to R; Tripp Cobra, Wilson 47DOXB, Wilson ETM 500B, Tripp Cobra

Find the weld on the Tripp.

1911 mag question - 1911 Forum

Notice the fluid stampings of the Tripp mag on the left and right. The .45 case head sits square against the back wall of the Tripp mag, the Wilson is rounded and forces the round forward when it presents for stripping. AND, the Tripp mag feed lips are CNC finished.

1911 mag question - 1911 Forum

This photo shows the slide stop interface. The Tripp mag on the bottom uses a hybrid follower with a metal interface where the Wilson on top uses a poly follower interface. The Wilson shows witness-marks where the slide stop engages the mag when empty. This mag is six month old and speaks volumes as to this critical area.

As a retired engineer, this is how my mind works while looking at new products. When a company makes guns and mags that go into them, the mag becomes an area where they can cut production costs. When the company only makes mags, their entire R&D budget is used on mags. Think about that!

If your 1911 mags have poly followers be sure to check them each time you load. Should this area wear out, your slide will not lock open when empty!

You asked , and I answered with the reasons why I only use Tripp Gen II Cobras for carry!

May be a zombie thread....it is undead!

I don't seea problem with cheap magazines for range use only. How ele can you do "malfuntiobn practice?" And don't tell me that malfunction practice is not valid.

While the best made mag may never fail a at the range doesn't mean it can't malfunction at some time. What if that time is in a stress situation?

So there really is no downside for having at least one cheap mag. My problem is that my cheap mags don't malfunction. Go figure.
