Default 1911 - .45 to .22 Conversion

Dang, this gun thing is addictive. Had my first gun less than a month and I'm already thinking about my next gun. (Alright, I admit, I was thinking about it the day before I picked up my first gun...but that just makes my point! )

I'm torn between getting a .22 for cheap practice and getting a .45 for home defense. My son suggested getting a 1911 in 45ACP and getting a 22 conversion kit for it. My question is this: Will a 22 conversion kit fit ANY 1911 or are there different conversion kits for different manufacturers 1911 models?

I'm not interested in competitive target shooting, so ultimate accuracy of either caliber is not overly critical. Practical accuracy for self defense is all I need.

Forget the conversion-
Get a 1911 in 45acp AND a 1911 in dedicated 22lr
A whole 1911 22 is about the same as a GOOD conversion set

truth hath been spoken. ive gone through pretty much every conversion kit for the 1911 and they all suck. reallllly bad.

get a good 1911 then get a dedicated 22lr. my favorite 22lr is the ruger 22/45. and im faaaaaaarrrrrrrrr from a ruger fan.

Hossfly is dead on. I just love my GSG 1911 .22. Cabelas has the Sig GSG cheaper than a Conv. unit.

Marvel 22 conversion is the best.

Check the Specs real close on the Colt 1911 .22. I found the castings to be less than I wanted. They are too soft look at melting points etc.
