Pros: Lightweight, durable, reliable, affordable, and easy to function.

Cons: Are mostly individual, like "I don't like the grip angle" and "I like to have a gun with a hammer." Others include "I prefer a gun that is all metal" and "the trigger sucks."

Polymer is a proven firearms material and grip angle is a personal preference. The trigger does in fact "suck" when compared to a tuned 1911, but that applies to most any production level gun compared to a slick custom single action. The worst trigger I have experienced lately was on an HK P30 9mm in DA/SA configuration, and that isn't a cheap pistol. The Glock trigger is very serviceable and works just fine.

So, in IMHO, the Glock 19 is one of the best OVERALL pistols made when considering durability, reliability, ease of function, and value. Also the 9mm cartridge is more than capable of defending you in the modern self defense loadings.

My personal pro's and con's. (I own a G19)

Pro:
Cheaper than most handguns NEW (USP, Sig, M&P, M92, 1911, etc)
Solid grip, finger grooves (Gen 3 and 4) are perfect
Durable, Rugged, Can take alot of abuse
Reliable, that trigger will ALWAYS fire, No Jams
Lightweight
Magazine design is great
Lot's of after market parts
Accurate

Con:

The magazine release button is too far from my thumb, it takes adjustment of the hand to hit the button. (This can be fixed by buying an extended mag release)

Trigger pull is mushy (also can be fixed by buying a different trigger)

These two are quoted for truth. The magazines have a body of polymer and steel at the top where the most pressure is exerted.

I actually had to learn to use my support hand thumb to release the mag, which at least put my hand in the right position to catch the mag.

However, the biggest pro of my Glock is that I SOLD IT!!!!! And replaced it with an all-steel 1911. How 'bout them apples?

Default Like them both, but...

I have 2 Glock 19's and a 1911 (as well as other 9mm's and .45's)--like them both but with my smallish hands, the Glock with a couple of extended buttons (mag and slide releases) works better. Those functions should be able to be done with only one hand. And the G19 is a more compact design than the full size and much heavier 1911.

I love shooting both of them but for self-defense, the Glock comes out on top for the following reasons: lighter, more concealable, simpler to operate under stress conditions much like the revolver (which is a big reason the Glock is so popular with police agencies)

By the way, to address the safety issue--the only safety that I truly trust is my trained brain. I keep my finger OFF the trigger until I'M are ready to shoot! Anything else is rookie stupidity.
