Weren't the M9 and the Glock 17 developed around the same time? I think the Glock was developed maybe 10 years after the original 92. That makes both of them pretty modern in my eyes.
I've never been in the military, but I doubt many of the guys that are care what the pistol is, because it is my understanding that very few people actually carry a sidearm.
I've got quite a few friends in college who are enlisted in the Army, are in ROTC and have already been to basic, and they didn't shoot pistols at all in basic. That tells me that they're not a high priority at all.
