None of the guns that I carry for self defense ever have the safety on. I prefer for them not to have a safety at all. I am the safety. It doesn't come out unless I need to fire it.

If I am storing it or handing it to someone for inspection then I will engage the safety. As soon as it goes back in the holster, the safety comes off. (I also drop the mag and lock the slide to the rear if I'm passing it to someone.)

Rifles and shotguns usually have the safety engaged unless I am about to shoot something. With the exception of the SHTF rifle that stays within reach at home. I already have to load and charge it. I don't need a third step as well.

Safeties are to prevent misfires if the firearm is dropped or jolted or damaged. They are not to prevent you from doing something stupid with your finger.

Thanks for the answers everyone, I'm surprised I got this many people who actually were willing to answer my question.

I thought it was an intelligent question and provoked some thoughtful and honest responses. I expected to see trolls and ended up learning something instead.

Same here. I especially liked TekGreg's history of the safety.

Thanks, JW! I just read so much that it eventually spills out somewhere! I'm glad no one got mad at the text wall. Not trying to overload, but 150 years is hard to make concise. :P

Yeah I wasn't mad. Yours was the most informative post on here IMO.

No problem. It took me a little while to read it, but I'm glad I did. That's part of the reason I like this forum; there's always something to learn.

C'mon, man, let it go.

This is like pulling bacon out of a dog's mouth,

when they have no front teeth. Funny, but

cruel.
