The people that make them claim that they give you less muzzle flip. I couldn't tell any difference.
Couldn't tell the difference when I changed the guide rod on a Kel Tec P11, other than a fail to do something every 2 or 3 magazines.

Glock designed Glocks with polymer recoil rods for a reason - they work. I have never had a problem with my Glocks. Why mess with a good thing?

The guid rod is just another piece you can personalize on a glock. I've had dealers ask why do if want to replace the factory one and have had comp shooters and police say it's one of the first things they change when they get a new pistol. My argument is buy them.. Try them.. if you don't like them send back or keep a spare. There are more than just ss springs out there just have to know what your looking for.

It happens but is rare. And of course metal parts break too! Some people also say you should throw out the stock short guide rod on a 1911 too - and install a long one. Or throw out the direct impingement system that's worked over 50 years in AR-15s. And my Colt 1911 has done fine with stock parts over 35 years!

I think we have to be careful not to let hype separate us from our money.

The biggest issue with assembling an AR isn't so much getting the parts together right - it's getting the right parts together. You'll remember the quality of a gun long after you forget how much you paid for it.
