I have a few 9mm Glocks in Gen 3 that I have never had an issue with. My new Gen 4's are in .40 because they manage recoil so well.

All my glocks are Gen 4 never had an issue with them but I heard nothing but good things from gen3 they are shooting ranges that rent them I suggest to do that and try them both

My thoughts are, go with the 3. A 9 doesnt have much recoil anyway. The one piece spring works great, why switch to something that may have problems. If the grip on the 3 fits your hand, don't mess with success. I looked at the 19, but the 17 felt so much better in my medium size hand, and the gun felt better balanced, I bought the 17 instead.
