Default Glock 17 stock magazine

Is it just me, or are these things a pain in the arse to take apart?

I read the manual and decided it was time to disassemble and clean the magazines for my glock. I pushed up on the plate through that little hole, but could not slide the floorplate off. I pushed up a little more, and the plate I was pushing up flipped sideways or something, but it was no longer visable through the access hole. I fiddled and wiggled for most of an hour, and never did get the bottom plate to slide off, but finally DID get that moving plate back into place. I loaded it up and tested it, and it seems to function fine - but I have relegated that to being my second spare mag when I carry.
I asked the owner of my LGS if he would show me how to disassemble a Glock mag, and he and the other guys behind the counter got a big laugh out of it before they said "Nope!"

Is there some secret here that they left out of the manual?

Some generations of Glock mag will have a notch along the rail of the floor plate. This means you have to use a small flathead screwdriver on the back of the floor plate to pry the rear of the floor plate off the rails . Then you can use a punch to depress the detent and push the floor plate forward.

Other generations don't have the notch and you can just drive the plate forward while depressing the detent.

You have to hold your mouth just right to do it in either case.

You pinch the sides of the mag at the base while you slide the plate off

That's true, you have to "gently" put the bottom in a vise, just enough to allow the floor plate to slide off. Glock mags don't need to be disassembled at all, IMO. They are very hard sprung and practically never cause malfunctions.

If in doubt, rarely, I blast canned air through the index holes.
