I would deffinitally go with the 17 for your first gun. You'll be needing lots of practice an the 9mm is much cheaper. Besides I feel its all about shot placement/capacity then he caliber.

I too am a .40 s&w fan. I carry a gen 4 g22 and felt recoil and muzzle flip are negligable for me. I find the 9mm to be a snappier round. Cost is a little more than 9mm but again, its negligable for me. Shoot them both an buy whats a good fit for you.
